UC Santa Cruz student missing in Yosemite

Searchers combed Yosemite Park Monday, looking for an University of California at Santa Cruz student who is missing after a weekend hiking trip, park officials said.

According to the park service, 22-year-old John Paul Chaufan Field was last seen near Kibbie Lake in the Hetch Hetchy area of northwestern Yosemite National Park.

Chaufan Field was on a backpacking trip with a group of fellow students and had begun their trek in the park on Friday near Cherry Lake.

The group set up camp near Kibbie Lake that evening and planned a day hike on Saturday. However, Chaufan Field decided not to join the group and has not been seen since.

Chaufan Field is 5' 5" tall, weighs 120 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a eyeglasses, an earth colored baggy plaid button-up long-sleeve shirt, an olive/brown undershirt, cut-off denim shorts, and Vibram Five-Finger shoes.

Approximately 50 people were involved in the ground search including search and rescue teams from Yosemite National Park Search and Rescue, Contra Costa County, Marin County, Monterey County, and the Bay Area Mountain Rescue Unit.

Additionally, the park helicopter and a California Highway Patrol helicopter are assisting ground teams in the search for Chaufan Field. Search dogs are also being utilized in the area.

Yosemite National Park is asking anyone who was in the area of Kibbie Lake over the weekend to call the Yosemite Emergency Communication Center at 209-379-1992. Phones will be answered 24-hours a day, 7-days per week.

Feds probe of Oakland school district police force

Oakland Unified School District's police force is being investigated by a federal grand jury after two highly publicized incidents.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that district officials say the FBI is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting and alleged racist remarks by the force's former chief.

District spokesman Troy Flint said the district is fully cooperating with the probe.

The district is the subject of two federal lawsuits surrounding the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Raheim Brown by school police Sgt. Barhin Bhatt. Bhatt opened fire after Brown reportedly tried to stab another officer with a screwdriver.

Bhatt was cleared of wrongdoing by Alameda County prosecutors.

Pete Sarna, the department's former chief, resigned after a black officer accused him of making racist statements.

Man apparently drowns in Russian River in Forestville

The Sonoma County coroner's office is trying to locate the next of kin of a man who was found dead in the Russian River in Forestville on Sunday evening.

The victim was with a friend at Steelhead Beach Regional Park around 6:30 p.m. when the incident occurred, Sonoma County sheriff's Lt. Steve Brown said.

Brown said the victim had told his friend that he could not swim but that was going to get in the water at Steelhead Beach to rinse off.

The victim walked downstream in shallow water, and when he didn't return right away, his friend called 911, Brown said.

Sheriff's deputies and the Forestville Fire Protection District responded and found the victim in three feet of water about 50 yards from where he had gone in, Brown said.

An autopsy on the victim is scheduled for today. The man's name is being withheld until his family has been notified of his death.
